I’ve been enjoying the food at The City Market in Wauwatosa for quite some time now and, to be honest, I’m not sure why I didn’t post up a review sooner. Regardless of the time it took me to post this, I’ve decided to finally post a review.
I ate lunch there today for the countless time and, as always, I enjoyed it. There is a wide range of food to choose from at very reasonable prices. If you find yourself at City Market early in the day, their egg scramble is always a good choice and you can put a wide assortment of different food in to it (but be aware, more than two items costs more). Otherwise they have a wide range of sandwiches, soups, and other entrées to choose from. If you’re a true Wisconsinite, like myself, then their Mac & Cheese is highly recommended will full but wanting more. Even if you aren’t looking to gorge yourself with an entire meal, they make a wide assortment of fancy coffee drinks, or just regular coffee if that’s your style, and have a great bakery to match. For about a third of the year, they even offer outdoor seating right on their patio overlooking North Avenue.
Just about the only complaint that I ever have when eating at City Market is the seating. If you’re there at a peak time it can be a daunting task to find an available table and if you’re there with a large group, they only have one table capable of seating more than about five. During these busy times, you will without fail also find a single hipster sitting alone with his or her laptop at a table for four while your party of four can only find an open table for two.
Regardless of the seating issues that they sometimes have, it is still worth a trip and is always a great destination to meet friends or family for a nice breakfast, brunch, or lunch.
As the latest addition to the still rather vacant One Mayfair Place on the corner of Mayfair and Center in Wauwatosa, the Ginza Sushi Bar is in a great area and has no immediate competitors when it comes to Sushi. When it opened about a week ago, my wife and I decided to oorder a few rolls for takeout. Although I don’t recall exactly which items off the menu we had ordered, all of the rolls were fresh and delicious. Even having only been open for a day, they seem to have already mastered takeout and had our food ready fast and already packed neatly in to a brown bag when I walked in the door. Although the size of the rolls aren’t as large as what I am spoiled with at Wasabi, they are still quite good and cause a little less damage to the wallet.
Earlier today we decided to make our second trip there, but this time for a nice sit-down lunch. Both of us ordered the $13 lunch bento. The price seemed a bit steep, but they really do a fantastic job of filling you up. We were promptly brought out a fresh salad and within a minute or two of clearing our salad plates we were brought the rest of the meal. Honestly, it was more than I expected. Both of us got the teryaki chicken bento, which had a large amount of the chicken, topped with thinly shredded and fried sweet potato, a California roll (which my wife substituted for a sweet potato roll – a very good choice), a steamed veggie whose name I cannot recall, the option of either a spring roll or some little fried stuffed rice ball, and a bowl of white rice. By the time I’d cleared my plate I was thoroughly stuffed and extremely satisfied.
Although I can’t (yet?) speak for the menu in it’s entirety, I am willing to pronounce Ginza a worthwhile destination if you are in the Mayfair area and looking for a good meal. It certainly isn’t the best sushi in the metro-Milwaukee area, but the food is good, the service is fast and friendly, and it is in a very convenient location across from Mayfair Mall. I will definitely be eating there again.

As the most recent addition to One Mayfair Place on the corner of Mayfair Road and Center Street in Wauwatosa, WI, the Flat Top Grill has already become a top choice when my wife and I are going out for a nice dinner, or have nothing in the house for a weekend breakfast. This chain is apparently already well established in Illinois, but this is only their second location to open up in Wisconsin and the first in the metro-Milwaukee area.
Their format is essentially the “Mongolian grill” create-your-own style of restaurant. While we’ve got plenty of those in and around Milwaukee, the Flat Top Grill kicks it up a notch. I can safely say that as long as Flat Top stays in Milwaukee, I will not be visiting any of the others. If you haven’t eaten at this type of restaurant before, you go up and fill a bowl with your choice veggies, meat, noodles, rice, and sauces. You then bring it up to a grill and they stir-fry it all together for you. In this aspect, Flat Top is the same as any other. Where they excel, however, is the variety of choices (It’ll be years before I’ve tried all of the sauces that tempt me), the freshness of everything offered, and most of all the last stop: the grill. Once you’ve got everything together, you go up to the grill and you have to decide which colored sticks to put in your meal to change it up. The one mandatory stick is the blue one for roti prata bread. I don’t know what exactly it is, but it’s super tasty and accompanies whatever you get perfectly. Other choices including having your creation turned in to a mu-shu wrap, a lettuce wrap, adding eggs, and plenty more. Once you’re done, you pass it over and go have a seat. There’s no waiting while it cooks, they’ll just bring it out to you when it’s ready.
If you’ve read this far your mouth is probably already salivating and you’re ready to hop in the car and go try it out. I have not, however, even touched on the breakfast yet. If you’re familiar with the area, you already know that One Mayfair Place was built on the rubble of Heineman’s (RIP). Breakfast took a big hit the day they closed their doors for the last time and I’ve since been hoping a good breakfast place would go back in. One finally did. Take the aforementioned lunch and dinner format that Flat Top uses and convert it over to breakfast foods and you have an awesome Saturday or Sunday breakfast or brunch. Just like with lunch or dinner, there’s all sorts of tasty things to toss in a bowl, then you take your creation and turn it in to pancakes, an omelette, scrambled eggs, or french toast. If that isn’t enough, you can also get bacon, turkey sausage, hash browns, oatmeal, fresh fruit, and more that I can’t think of off-hand. Yes, it’s as delicious as it sounds.
If any of the above food sounds even remotely good to you, you’ll like the Flat Top Grill. Regardless of what type of food you like you’ll be able to create something that will leave you highly satisfied and eager to go back up for a second bowl – if you’ve still got room.
