Why is Apple banning screen protectors?

Rumors coming in from various places around the web are reporting that Apple has decided to stop screen protectors from being sold in Apple stores. According to sources for MacWorld, “Apple will no longer sell such products, or any other products that adhere to Apple devices, in either the online Apple Store or Apple retail stores.” This apparently even includes the anti-glare film that is being sold to fit pretty much any Apple laptop. The reasoning behind this move is not exactly clear, as this has been one of the best selling iPhone and iPod accessories, but an educated guess would say that Apple doesn’t want to give off the impression that such protection is needed. This writer will, however, continue to keep one on his iPhone.

Although you will likely not find these at Apple stores, you can always still buy them online.

Apple's Black Friday Sale Teaser

The image to the right implies that just about everything they make will in one way or another be included in the sale, but there is no concrete word over the accuracy of the flier circulating last week.

The web page itself gives little detail,

Reserve Online, Pick Up In-Store For The Holidays

With plenty of time to spare for the 2009 holiday season (although the seasonal isle at Walgreens would make you think Christmas is next week), Apple has announced a new option consumers to reserve a product through their online store and have it ready and waiting at your nearest Apple Store. Their goal is to guarantee to customers that the product they are looking to buy for their loved ones this December will be available in-store when they go looking for it.

As Apple’s Reserve and Pick-up page states,

“With Reserve and Pick Up, you can make sure the top things on your list are definitely under the tree. Reserve an iPod or Mac online today and it will be waiting for you to pick up and purchase at an Apple Retail Store from December 15 to 24. You can even have many products wrapped. It’s just another way we make it even easier to get through the holiday crowds — and your gift list.”
