So, you want to dress up as everyone’s favorite captain of the Planet Express ship this Halloween? Awesome choice. Most of the costume is pretty straight-forward, but you’re going to need to get a few things to really complete the costume the right way. This guide will hopefully help you be the best Leela you can possibly be. First and foremost, you should probably be of the female persuasion or look damn good in drag. Also, it helps to be a cyclops.

The Eye
Ok, so you probably aren’t a cyclops. You’ll have to fake it. This will probably require the most crafting skills of the whole costume, so be ready. One of the easiest, but least realistic ways to do it would be to get something like a white masquerade mask, grab a black Sharpie Magnum, and draw a circle in the middle. If you want to be a bit more detailed, you can buy a cheap tap light, disassemble it, cut the lens to fit over your eyes and nose, cut small slits for your eyes, and use the aforementioned Sharpie to draw a black circle in the middle. Some holes on both sides and an elastic string will hold it on.

Purple Hair
If you’ve already got reasonably straight or slightly wavy long hair, then just buy some purple hair spray, put it in a pony tail, and you’re done. If you don’t have the right hair, you can always get a nice cheap purple wig and put that in a ponytail.

White Tank Top
It really doesn’t get any more straight-forward than this. Get a white tank top cut similar to Leela’s and tuck it in to your pants.

Dark Gray Pants
Just like the tank top, this is a pretty easy find and you may even already have a pair in your wardrobe. Just make sure they’re pants and they’re dark gray. Leela’s pants are plainly drawn, so if you want to be imaginative and think that she seems like the type of spaceship captain who would wear cargo pants, go for it.

Gray Flat Boots
Again, pretty simple. Added bonus: If you live in a cold climate, these will come in handy next time it snows. Make sure they’re a lighter gray than the your pants.

“This Thing I Wear On My Wrist”
If you’re lazy, you can just get a long (6″) gray wristband and go with that. If you’re crafty, you can cut a few pieces of paper out to put on that wristband to better match Leela’s. If you’re really crafty, you can embed your iPhone or iPod Touch in to it. That would be pretty freakin’ sweet.

Blaster Gun
Is the above linked blaster gun exact? No, but it’s really awesome and you should get it. You just never know when you’re going to need to blast something.

Nibbler
Leela: So your name is Lord Nibbler? That’s a coincidence.
Nibbler: That name is for your sake. In the time it would take to pronounce one letter of my true name, a trillion cosmoses would flare into existence and sink into eternal night.

Well, there you have it! If you have any suggestions, changes, or wish to share a picture of your version of Turanga Leela, please feel free to leave a comment.

If you’re an avid viewer of MSNBC or a regular reader here at Chai Life, you’re probably already aware that a month or so ago, Republican candidate for Governor of Wisconsin Scott Walker’s spokesman made first place in Keith Olbermann’s “Worst Persons” list. Well, this time Walker earned that top spot for himself.

It seems ridiculous that a legitimate candidate would release something in such a huge typeface and boast that it is 68 pages, but see for yourself. He’s so proud of it that he even mentioned its 68 page length in the file name, typed it in all-caps, and stuck an exclamation point at the end. Here’s the download link direct from Walker’s own website:

Mario is probably the most influential video game character of all time. So much so, that I even did my best to honor him for Halloween one year. Here’s to the last 25 years of Nintendo’s front-man and his legacy of awesome. The following video is an awesome mash-up commemorating 25 years of Mario.

To any and all Jewish readers I might have out on the Internets, may you have a good and peaceful new year.

No clue what I’m talking about? Rosh Hashanah is one of Judaism’s high holidays which began tonight at sundown and marks a new year of 5771 on the Jewish calendar. You can learn a lot more about it over at Wikipedia.

I’m admittedly not a fan of pretty much all Axe products, because I find they generally smell like shit. I have, however, been using the Axe Shower Tool for quite some time now and it’s actually about as awesome as a shower scrubber can possibly be. Their new commercial for it really takes the product to a new level of awesome, so I just had to share it. Enjoy.

As you may or may not be aware, I am the proud father of a now 8 month old son named Judah. We’ve been putting some of the better videos of him up on our YouTube channel, but for some reason I haven’t yet posted any of them here for your viewing pleasure. So, without further ado, here are my favorites from the oldest video to the newest:

City Market on UrbanspoonI’ve been enjoying the food at The City Market in Wauwatosa for quite some time now and, to be honest, I’m not sure why I didn’t post up a review sooner. Regardless of the time it took me to post this, I’ve decided to finally post a review.

I ate lunch there today for the countless time and, as always, I enjoyed it. There is a wide range of food to choose from at very reasonable prices. If you find yourself at City Market early in the day, their egg scramble is always a good choice and you can put a wide assortment of different food in to it (but be aware, more than two items costs more). Otherwise they have a wide range of sandwiches, soups, and other entrées to choose from. If you’re a true Wisconsinite, like myself, then their Mac & Cheese is highly recommended will full but wanting more. Even if you aren’t looking to gorge yourself with an entire meal, they make a wide assortment of fancy coffee drinks, or just regular coffee if that’s your style, and have a great bakery to match. For about a third of the year, they even offer outdoor seating right on their patio overlooking North Avenue.

Just about the only complaint that I ever have when eating at City Market is the seating. If you’re there at a peak time it can be a daunting task to find an available table and if you’re there with a large group, they only have one table capable of seating more than about five. During these busy times, you will without fail also find a single hipster sitting alone with his or her laptop at a table for four while your party of four can only find an open table for two.

Regardless of the seating issues that they sometimes have, it is still worth a trip and is always a great destination to meet friends or family for a nice breakfast, brunch, or lunch.

As soon as I heard that there was a forthcoming major revamp of the Apple TV, I had high hopes. I’ve long been frustrated with the lack of innovation and inflated prices over at Time Warner Cable, and the prospects of having an inexpensive box I can plug in to my TV that would allow me to cancel my cable is an alluring idea. This, however, is not what the latest revision of the Apple TV offers.

The rumors were swirling that Apple would be porting the iOS to the Apple TV. Although I suppose this is still something that could happen in the future, it did not manifest for this release. Instead, they chose to just update the software a little bit and write their own programs to support Netflix streaming, YouTube, and Flickr. The addition of Netflix and YouTube are fantastic additions, but what really would have sealed the deal, at least for me, is a third-party App Store. Hulu Plus in particular would elevate the Apple TV from a novelty rental box to a potential competitor to the cable and satellite oligopolies that currently dominate your television. The possibilities don’t stop there, though. Pay channels such as HBO and Showtime could easily release an App tied to a subscriptions service. Depending on the versatility of the included remote, it could even become a gaming system. As Apple has learned from its other iOS devices, the possibilities are quite literally endless when you open up development to third-party developers.

Instead, Apple released a smaller black box that basically does the same thing it did before, but now you rent instead of buy. Coming from a company that is known for innovation, the Apple TV is a pathetic shadow of its true potential.

I should probably start out this post by say how much I hate the fact that the media has labeled an Islamic community center the “Ground Zero Mosque”. There are a few major things wrong with that. First and foremost, it isn’t at Ground Zero. It’s a few blocks away. You can’t even see ground zero from this location. Would the out-of-business Burlington Coat Factory that is currently at that location be referred to as the “Ground Zero Burlington Coat Factory”? I doubt it. Aside from that, it isn’t a Mosque. It’s a community center. It’s purpose is the same as any JCC (Jewish Community Center) or YMCA and just like a JCC or YMCA, it will also have an area for worship. So, lets call this what it really should be called: “The Lower Manhattan Islamic Community Center”.

I guess what pisses me off about this more than anything else is the fact that this is even a national controversy. In opposing a peaceful, moderate, and fully westernized Islamic center, it’s opponents are demonstrating the exact bigotry that led the September 11th attackers to attack the United States in the first place. The rise in anti-Islamic bigotry in this country is precisely what the extremist terrorist groups want. It allows them to more easily radicalize and recruit otherwise peaceful and moderate Muslims. This country was based on freedom of religion and it scares me that we are going in a direction that condones the losses of those rights for certain ethnic or religious groups. A similar type of hatred, bigotry, and scapegoating is what has led to virtually every genocide in history.

If someone can post a legitimate argument as to why this shouldn’t be built and explain its opposition as anything other than bigotry, please by all means inform me. But until then, I will continue to see the opponents of the Lower Manhattan Islamic Community Center as racist.

Looks like someone needs explain to their staff that they should think before they tweet. Lets just hope the Barrett campaign can capitalize off this.
