Looks like someone needs explain to their staff that they should think before they tweet. Lets just hope the Barrett campaign can capitalize off this.

Republicans have a long and storied tradition of taking a national tragedy, such as the events of September 11th, 2001, and manipulating it in their favor. Their strategies often line the pockets of executives, wall street, government contractors and military contractors with excessive amounts of cash. Now is the time for the Democrats to employ a similar strategy and take advantage of the horrible eco-disaster taking place in the golf coast. Unlike the Republican party, however, their motives can be entirely pure. Help wean this country off of its oil dependence and on to cleaner, safer, and renewable energy sources.

The oil spill that began two weeks ago and continues to pump massive amounts of oil in to the gulf of Mexico today is a huge disaster of epic proportions. There isn’t a sane person in this country that doesn’t think so and if there is one positive thing that can come from this, it is to utilize the hugely negative view of oil, specifically offshore drilling, to help pass a sweeping energy bill that will pump money in to wind farms, solar technologies, and research of future clean and renewable energy sources. Many people might not realize this, but the United States is one of the more ideal spots in the world to utilize solar energy. If the government would help subsidize installation of existing technology, while promoting the research neccesary to produce less expensive solar technologies, the US could easily find itself requiring less and less of the dirty fossil fuels.

So why aren’t we doing this? There is an underwater volcano of oil spewing in to the Gulf of Mexico as I type this and I sincerely hope that the Democrats in the Senate and House realize that this horrible man-made disaster is their golden opportunity and take full advantage of the growing hatred of oil in this country and pass sweeping energy reform.

There is quite a large selection of Facebook pages with over one million members (Fans? Likers? I can’t keep track of the correct terminology). The following page is the absolute worst one out there. It’s so offensive, I almost don’t even want to link directly to it, this wouldn’t be the World Wide Web without links, so here it is:

DEAR LORD, THIS YEAR YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTOR, PATRICK SWAYZIE. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTRESS, FARAH FAWCETT. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE SINGER, MICHAEL JACKSON. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, MY FAVORITE PRESIDENT IS BARACK OBAMA. AMEN

When the FBI is searching for whack-jobs who are actually trying to assassinate a public figure such as the President, they need to closely examine all 1,165,602 (as of this posting) of the douche-nozzles that “like” that page.

If you’ve been looking to pick up your copy of Sean Hannity’s book, “Conservative Victory: Defeating Obama’s Radical Agenda”, but are having trouble finding a copy, it’s because you’re looking in the wrong section.

The following graphic, presented on the air by Fox “News” recently shows the split amongst the GOP when it comes to support for three potential 2012 presidential candidate. Keep in mind, that their source is the ever-reliable nationally accredited polling organization known as “Opinion”. Coming in at a mind-numbing 70% support is, of course, Sarah Palin, followed by by Mike Huckabee with 63% of the pie chart and Mitt Romney with a mere 60%. This, of course, perfectly adds up to a complete 193% of the pie. Wait, WHAT?

This aired on Jimmy Fallon’s show last night and is absolutely hilarious. To sum it up, Sarah Palin’s new book goes rogue, flees, and shoots Rachel Maddow. Enjoy the surprise ending!

While surfing the web tonight, I stumbled upon what is quite possibly the scariest carved pumpkin that I’ve ever seen. Happy Halloween!

Calling the Public Option a “hot” issue has a new meaning…

Blog Action DayAs you may or may not be aware, today is the third annual Blog Action Day. According to their own description, “Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion.” With that in mind, the topic for this year’s event is Climate Change. I’ve put a lot of thought in to from which angle I wanted to tackle this urgent subject, as it is effecting the world in countless ways and have decided to use this opportunity to express my views a phrase that continually gets under my skin, often used by those who stand to profit by climate change and the sheep who follow them.

“Do you believe in climate change?”

This question, or variations of it, is one I have constantly seen posed in the mainstream media, asked on talk shows, posted on the Internet, and been asked in person. It seems innocent enough to those who would look no deeper in to it, except for one underlying issue: Climate change is not a belief. A ‘belief’ is something in which you offer your blind faith that it is true without having actual proof. One can choose to not believe in climate change, but that requires at least a certain level of ignorance. The changes in Earth’s climate that have been occurring over the past 50 years and continue to escalate today have for a long time now by accepted by the international scientific community (those kids that you cheated off of in high school) to be caused by human actions. In fact, every time they perform another study on the topic they do nothing but reaffirm their findings. In the past two years, not a single nationally or internationally recognized scientific organization has offered an opposing stance. With that amount of support from the smartest people around the world, there is no conceivable way that the term “belief” can somehow be applied.

Climate change has long since gone beyond the partisan-politics played by those who stand to gain financially and managed to convince the masses that this was some sort of lie. It is time not to bicker over whether or not it is really happening, but to act. There are plenty of ways that your or I can make a difference, such as switching to more efficient lighting, recycling, driving more efficient vehicles, or installing solar panels. Likewise, businesses can do these same things and make an even bigger impact that just one household can. The biggest and best way for the world to change as a whole, however, is through governmental legislation that not only changes policy, but helps change how the world views energy usage and renewable resources. The US government is currently working on a climate change bill as I type this, so put some thought in to contacting your congressman or senators and telling them how you feel.

If you, like the 13,194 other people who signed up for this year’s Blog Action Day, want to help do something about climate change, you can start by simply correcting the next person who asks you if you “believe” in climate change and telling them that it isn’t a belief and explaining to them what they can do about it.

uncle-samEverywhere you look these days there are hoards of teabaggers, 9/12ers, and other uncategorized crazies crying about how socialist the pending health care reform is. These people just love hanging off the nuts of the Glenn Becks and Rush Limbaughs of the right-wing. What they are unaware of, however, is how truly socialist this otherwise capitalistic country already is and how truly dependent they are on that socialism. As such, I’ve compiled what I consider to be the top ten socialist programs run by the United States government that every citizen takes for granted, including the anti-socialist nuts holding signs and protesting.

  1. Public Education
You, your children, you family, or someone you know has participated in this socialist institution. Not surprisingly, the ancestors of the same nuts crying foul today were doing the same thing when government-funded school were first proposed.
  2. Police, Fire, and Emergency Services
Next time you get robbed, your house is on fire, or you need other emergency services, be sure to turn them away because you hate socialism.
  3. The US Postal Service
It’s pretty nice to be able to send and receive mail every day (except Sunday) wherever you are in the country. “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”
  4. Medicare, Medicaid
My absolute favorite of the right-wing protesters are the ones who don’t want socialized medicine, but insist that the government not interfere with their Medicare and/or Medicaid. Ignorance is just too gentle of a word.
  5. Public Subways, Metro Systems, Buses, and Light Rails
Millions of people in our nations cities use these socialist methods of transportation to get to work, go shopping, or just get around town.
  6. Sidewalks, Roads, & Highways
Sure, not every street in the country is in the best condition, but they wouldn’t even be paved at all if the government didn’t provide them as a service to all of its people.
  7. Public Parks, Beaches, and Zoos
Who doesn’t enjoy a stroll in the park, relaxing on the beach, or seeing monkeys fling poo at the zoo? No one, that’s who. If it weren’t a national park protected and funded by the government, the Grand Canyon would probably already be the Grand Landfill.
  8. Public Museums, Public Libraries
These fun and educational institutions are a vital part to any decent city. Their enjoyment can be shared by everyone because of their “socialist” government funding.
  9. S-CHIP and other state-run insurance programs
I’m not sure how, but the Glen Becks and Rush Limbaughs of the world have managed to convince their listeners that health insurance for children is a bad thing.
  10. Social Security
I’m skeptical that I’ll ever see a dime of the money that gets taken out of my pay check to pay the social security of others, but this New Deal program was a vital part of recovery from the great depression. It’s even got “social” right in the title!

There you have it! Are there even more socialist government programs that hugely benefit the country? You bet. Know what that I didn’t list but you feel belongs on there? Feel free to leave a comment.
