I recently joined some good friends for dinner at one of the Third Ward’s newest restaurants. You could probably drive past the Smoke Shack a dozen times and never notice the tiny wooden building on Milwaukee Street, but it would be worth your while stop and have a meal. Smoke Shack does exactly one thing, and they do it well: Barbecue. They use quality dry rubbed meat, smoke it to perfection, then offer it up with four home-made sauces to choose from.
The second we walked in, I knew I would like it. Just about everything in the place is wood, which absorbs the smell of the smoking and makes you want to sit down and dig in the very second you enter. The five of us sat down at a very spacious booth that, if needed, could probably have sat 8. Unable to decide what looked the most appealing, my wife and I opted to split the four-meat combo. This intimidatingly large platter of meat consists of housemade sausage, pulled pork, pulled chicken and sliced brisket. As if that’s not enough food for you, it also comes with a large slice of corn bread and an additional side. I went for the sweet potato fries, but the mac & cheese, kettle chips, and a few others also sound great. Back to the meat, though. The pulled pork, pulled chicken, and brisket were absolutely amazing, but it was the sausage that really hit it out of the park. Regardless of which sauce you prefer (they’re all uniquely good), it complements any of the meats perfectly. Even without sauce, the smoking gives everything such a great flavor you can enjoy it “dry”.
If you aren’t drooling by now or the idea of a new barbecue place in Milwaukee’s Third Ward doesn’t sound good, then I wouldn’t bother with the Smoke Shack. If, however, you like barbecue and want to have a great meal, stop by and make your taste buds happy.
