Android Overtakes Apple in US Smartphone Usage

According to the NPD Group, a market research firm, Android has usurped Apple for the #2 spot in the US smartphone market. RIM still leads the pack with it’s Blackberrys (-ies?) commanding a 36% market share, with Google’s Android OS now at 28% and Apple’s iPhone at 21%. AT&T, amazingly still the only company to offer the iPhone in the US, is still the leader of the pack with a total 32% of the smartphone market with Verizon trailing closely behind at 30%.

With the release of the iPhone OS 4.0, the next generation iPhone (Potentially called the iPhone HD), and a rumored Verizon offering all coming this summer, one can likely expect the iPhone’s market share to climb back up by fall and potentially retake second place.

    Okay, now that’s pretty crazy. I wouldn’t have expected the Android to come out on top. I have personally used both devices, and I own an iPhone, and I prefer it. I guess the Android came out on top because it’s available on multiple devices and multiple networks. If you count single phones, then the iPhone still dominates.

    Andriod is gaining lots of speed and quickly. What does bug me is the fact that the iPhone is only available with At&t. They are not the greatest company and their customer service is not up to par.

    I completely agree, but it is just a matter of time before the iPhone is available on two or more carriers in the US and its market share will skyrocket.

    Once the Apple gets away from At&t the iPhone will reclaim the market. Android is a good phone but it is no iPhone. Just available to more customers.

    Blackberry for this time still (at least to me) much better than any other phone for a business supporting phone. While iphone still no 1 for multimedia.

    I really like blackberry compare to the rest of them. Glad to here that it still leads in the row. This post is interesting, keep on posting some update, be back for more reading.

    RIM: who knows how many models
    Adroid: again multiple models
