Ok, so I think I can pretty much blame Jessie on this one: I’m a Whedonholic. Joss Whedon is pretty much awesome. It started when I began watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Jessie in her dorm room our sophomore year. It was just a matter of time before I was hooked and started watching the Buffy spin-off series, Angel. This pretty much solidified Joss Whedon as a master of the television arts in my mind. Then I learned that he had also written two amazing animated films: Toy Story and Titan AE.

In 2002, Joss created yet another masterpiece in the short-lived one season masterpiece of a show, Firefly. If it sounds familiar, that’s because there’s also a new movie coming out which is written and directed by Joss called Serenity, which is based off the show and has all of the original cast members. My friend Zach, a fellow Whedonholic, has been attempting to get me to watch Firefly for a long time and since the movie is coming out in about two weeks, I finally decided to just break down and buy the DVD. Well, I just spent two straight days watching the entire series and let me tell you, it was thoroughly awesome. I don’t regret a single penny of it. My only wish is that the series had not ended, because it had incredible potential. Wait, I take that back. My only wish is that the movie does so incredibly well that Fox can’t help but renew the series and give the go-ahead for more movies.

What I’m trying to say here is that anyone reading this should GO SEE SERENITY WHEN IT HITS THEATERS ON SEPTEMBER 30th!!

P.S. If you don’t understand the title of this post, read this.

All of you must get over you Whedon craziness! Ugg! “Buffy the Vampie is a great show!” Apparently “good show” equals show with enough quirky backstory to keep people oddly hooked. Guess what? Crack cocaine keeps people hooked and always wanting more! Therefore my irrelevant analogy proves me right! Ugg!

Bah, you clearly didn’t read through my post, as it had little to do with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which by the way, DOES in fact rock. ;p

  • http://www.livejournal.com/~drivethru Randi

You know, Nathan, I gotta say that I completely resent your comparison of Buffy to crack cocaine. And besides, Buffy isn’t an addictive, great show due to its quirky backstory; rather, it is an addictive, great show due to the phenomanal dialogue and constant references in each individual episode to its own quirky backstory.

    The end of my tyrade.

Whats the sign of a true addict? Someone who rationalizes and defends their addiction with technicality and circular rhetoric!

Nathan claims people like object A because of characteristic A.
Randi retorts that people like object A because of characteristic A and B.
All you logic students out there does Randi’s assertion disprove Nathan’s?

As far as “phenominal dialogue” here are a few Buffy quotes I “googled”:

“I was totally beachless for a month and a half. No one suffered like I suffered.” — Cordelia

    “Don’t warn the tadpoles!”
    “Don’t warn the tadpoles?”
“I… I have frog fear.” — Willow and Giles (it’s a Forever Knight thing.)

    “Can I just say… ghuuuh!” — Xander

Yes, there is no doubt Whedon makes Bill Shakespeare look like a sitcom writer.

Now that I am done using Evan’s blog as a platform to poke fun at Randi I will say this: Evan burn me a secure, off-site archival copy of Firefly so that I can test its integrity in my DVD player. Then after watching this alleged triumph of Whedon’s I can cast a more accurate judgement. I will say that Fox cancled it, so it does have that going for it.

I am not going to try and be so well-written as Nathans retorts in this post. Instead, my rebuke will be completely flammatory.

You know those great curses spewed out of the mouths of dying wizards in really bad movies that noone would ever have seen were it not for Mystery Science Theater 3000? Their mouths drenched in blood and bile, they sputter their last words, a volatile curse upon their slayers. You would change the channel at this moment, were it not for Tom Servo saying something completely hilarous.

This is the sort of curse that I am now forced to assail you with. One day, a brave descendant of your family can overcome it, but not without beating contra without the cheat code, fishing out the ring of mordor from mount doom, and certainly not without cutting down the tallest tree in the forest with a herring.

Allow me to be a little more specific. sarah michelle gellar (and I intentionally do not capitalize the name, even though I would capitalize the name of offensive people in history such as Stalin or Barney the dinosaur) has long been riding the coat tails of her one success, even though she barely deserves to be in it, let alone on the cover. I speak of course, of Cruel Intentions. This would be a tolerable event, except that the movie is responsible for the gut wrenching sequel that is Cruel Intentions 2. And that completely negates any artistic merit that might be bestowed upon her.

While I find the portrayal of “strong” women who are actually 105 pound girls who might as well call themselves by a boys name because they have the body of one anyways, to be quite amusing, it is a role only worthy of being played by actresses possessing two key facets that she does not have. One, she must have talent. Two, she must be at least pleasant to look at. A good example would be Jessica Alba. While it took her a few years to develop the rarely seen on WB attribute known as talent, she at least, looks pretty damn good.

And as I quoted to our esteemed friend Mr. Souer, in my entire life, despite having a partial affinity towards vampires in fiction, I have known only ONE person willing to admit that they have watched Buffy, much less enjoyed it. I am so sorry that such an intelligent and witty person such as yourself has to be the one to quadruple that number in one single day.

In the interest of not completely alienating an otherwise great person such as yourself, I feel I must provide you with some form of pennance. Since you have clearly forgotten what a “good” show is, I strongly recommend you keep one thing in mind. When watching a tv show, and especially when admitting that you enjoy it, you must always think to yourself:

    Would Mr. T this show?

  • Rich Welsh

    That should read:

“Would Mr. T watch this show?”

  • http://www.digitallywise.com Evan

Mr. T would definately watch Buffy. Plus, for some reason, the topic keeps changing. This post is about how awesome Firefly is and how excited I am to see Serenity when it hits theaters this friday. ;D

  • Rich Welsh

Honestly Serenity looks like a bad scifi program that would be on SciFi channel at 4:00 in the morning.

Have you seen Battlestar Galactica? Season2 just ended, it is probably my favorite show. I watched the first 5 episodes of Prison Break last night, and I like it.

Couple more months though, and The Shield will be back on. :)

  • Rich Welsh

That’s me, changing the topic again!

  • http://www.digitallywise.com Evan

You and your double posts! ;p

I am a huge fan of the fox tv show Prison Break. I started watching it a few weeks ago and I am now totally addicted. I have heard that the new series starts in March, is this true? and do you know the exact date?

Many thanks and all the best with your blog
